

In ‘WOODSLIPPERCOUNTERCLATTER’ Howe’s texts are blended with the resonant sounds of Grubbs’s composition for piano and field recordings made in the near silence of off-hours in Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Veering away from the stuttering, profoundly fragmented séance of ‘Frolic Architecture’ (2011), Howe and Grubbs present a sound-work that germinates from new Susan Howe text collages and prose poems (referencing ‘Tom Tit Tot’, ‘Childe Roland’, Paul Thek, W.B.

He is Associate Professor Of Music at the CUNY Graduate Center and Brooklyn College, where he also teaches in the MFA programs in Performance & Interactive Media Arts (PIMA) and Creative Writing. Grubbs was a member of Gastr del Sol, Bastro and Squirrel Bait and he has performed with the Red Krayola, Will Oldham, Tony Conrad, Pauline Oliveros and Loren Connors, among many others. David Grubbs has released twelve solo albums and is the author of ‘Records Ruin The Landscape: John Cage, The Sixties, And Sound Recording’ (Duke University Press). In 2014 Christine Burgin and New Directions published Howe’s ‘Spontaneous Particulars: The Telepathy Of Archives’. Capen Chair in Poetry & The Humanities at the State University New York at Buffalo until her retirement in 2007. Her earlier critical study, ‘My Emily Dickinson’, was re-issued in 2007 with an introduction by Eliot Weinberger. Author of more than a dozen books of poetry and two of literary criticism, Susan Howe’s recent collection of poems ‘That This’, published by New Directions, won the Bollingen Prize in 2011.
